Community Foundation Small Grant

The Community Foundation Small Grant Programme supports projects which will make a sustained impact in the lives of disadvantaged people in Wiltshire and Swindon. For this grant programme applicants must demonstrate that majority of their beneficiaries are disadvantaged in one or more of the following ways:

  • Economically – e.g. facing financial difficulties
  • Socially – e.g. not able to participate in normal activities without support
  • Geographically – e.g. living in an isolated or disadvantaged community with limited access to services
  • Physically – e.g. having additional needs, a disability or mental health issues

Grants up to £2,000 per year, and two year funding is available (total £4,000) for organisations who have an income of less than £50,000 per year. *If you choose to apply to, or currently hold, a Foundation Main Grant you will be unable to apply for a Small Grant.

What We Fund

We fund local and regional organisations where the majority of people benefiting from the grant live in Swindon or Wiltshire. Branches of national organisations can only apply if you have a local management committee based in Swindon and Wiltshire, your own constitution, and a bank account you control.

The following can apply if they have an income of less than £50,000 per year:

  • a constituted voluntary or community organisation
  • a registered charity
  • a not-for-profit company or Community Interest Company where a majority of the directors receive no payment from the company

Your organisation must have:

  • an active management committee of at least 3 people who are not related to each other, living at the same address or in a long-term relationship.
  • a bank account with two signatories who are unrelated to each other

Your organisation must have less than 12 months running costs in unrestricted reserves. This means:

  • In the accounts at the end of your last financial year, the amount shown as Unrestricted reserves (not including any Designated funds) must be less than your expenditure during that year

The documents you need are:

  • a constitution
  • an Equal Opportunities Statement
  • a Child Protection Policy or Vulnerable People Policy (over 18 years) and procedures if you are working with children or vulnerable adults
  • a copy of a recent bank statement

Eligible Types of Project

We only fund work that will mainly benefit people who live in Swindon or Wiltshire. We focus our grants on activities for communities and people who cannot afford to cover the costs themselves. You can apply for a grant:

  • to continue the work your organisation already does
  • to pay for a new activity

Your application can be for any reasonable costs related to the activity. This means you can apply for:

  • core costs - these might include (but not only) salaries, training, equipment, insurance or premises
  • projects costs - these might include (but not only) salaries, training, equipment, insurance or premises
  • capital costs (buildings and equipment) - grants for capital costs are one-off only (i.e. not multi-year) and if the cost of the project is more than the grant, you must have already secured most of the rest you need when you apply to us

You must plan to start spending the grant within 6 months of when it is awarded
